Has a Book Ever Made You Hungry?
I don't mean a cookbook. But have you ever been reading a book and whatever the characters in the stories are eating really appeals?
Don't these tomatoes--fresh off the vine--look good? I LOVE tomatoes. :) Especially home grown!
This is chocolate chip mint ice cream. Yum.
When I'm writing my books, I include food when it's relevant. My daughter was reading one of my YA a long time ago and she said, "Mom, they never ate. They never slept." So it's important to feed your characters every once in a while, and no matter how much wild stuff they're involved in, they need to sleep.
In role-playing games, some games try for a more realistic approach. I hate them. LOL You have to allow your characters to sleep. What a waste of precious game-playing time. Fighting the monsters. Finding the clues. Solving the mysteries. Saving the world. Plus in some games, that's when the monsters attack you. Makes sense, right?
Then they have to eat and drink or they get weak. And then they have to carry all that stuff with them and that adds weight and that makes them tired. Plus it takes precious room in your limited baggage. When I'd rather just collect other stuff like weapons and jewels that I can sell off to have money for better, more protective clothing and spells, or whatever.
But yeah, sometimes it's a necessary evil. Characters have to eat and sleep.
When I was reading one of my older manuscripts that I'm reworking, I got hungry.
In Deadly Secrets--a woman alone trips over this hunk's big feet on the sandy beach at Galveston during a tropical storm--I was there during it and it happened just like I described--except for tripping over the hunk of a guy on the beach--
So she's afraid she's being followed and he has the idea that they should have a pizza and champagne together in his room after a day spent together, so she's not so worried about whoever is following her, if anyone is following her...and I wanted a pizza!
The totally hot guy would be nice too, but have you ever read a scene where someone's eating something and it sounds really good and you'd like to have one of those too?
Unfortunately, my pizza didn't turn out half as good as the one I shared in the room with the hunk and the champagne and the stalker following me. :)
So how about you? Ever get hungry when you're reading a book?

This happens a lot. Especially since I am on a diet all the time. Cocktails in a book also make me want one, or ten.
LOL, Steph, you are too cute!!! I love it!
Yes! It happened last night when I was reading A Howl. I wanted a hot fudge Sunday :-)
lol, Bonnie!! Did you have one???
Terry,
No, I was already in bed. I totally though about it because I have part of a brownie sitting in my fridge and it would have gone great heated up with ice cream and fudge sauce on top.
Damn... Now I might just have to go make it now.
Happy Saturday!
LOL, Bonnie!!! Yum, I'll join you! :)
Bonnie Hot Fudge with the Cherry on top LOL!! CHECK!! Actually I wanted the Omelet that Duncan was making in Howl. So I did get up and throw together a Omelet that next morning. And now thinking about it. I want one again. And Duncan making it would be even better.
Yes Donna. Lol..Duncan in my kitchen making me breakfast.. Awesome visual! Or.. how about.. Duncan naked with a cherry on top :-) Now there's a snack.
Too funny, Donna! See, that's important! :) It's some of the fun of storytelling and making the characters real. :)
Bonnie, too funny!!! All great visuals. I loved Bella and Devylon in Heart of the Wolf, too when he was cooking in the kitchen. :)
