Could You Love a Troll???

I've read tons of myths and legends from around the world, loved the Greek mythologies and Native American myths, South American tales, Japanese also, tales from Scandinavia and Africa, too. Egyptian lore and so many more. So when I went to the world of fantasy--Disney World for the July RWA conference--I found something I couldn't live without. Beside the stuffed wolf pup from Canada to display at book signings. But also, trolls. Yep. Trolls. From Norway. Adorable trolls.

Now, not one legend have I read that showed trolls in a good light. Not one. They're mean, nasty, ill-tempered, and deadly. In all the role-playing games I've played, the same thing. Trolls are bad news. They're powerful, huge, and dangerous. And they LOVE to throw boulders.

So why in the world would I fall in love with trolls?

Love, is the key.

Just like with werewolves that are seen in a bad light, so are trolls. But think about it. If a troll exists, he has to have a mate. If he has a mate, he has to have children. Everyone needs love.

And in all worlds--some of every species are good and some are bad. Therefore, trolls need loving too.

When I found a pair of troll lovers in the Norway of Disney World, my heart melted and I had to open my home to them.

Just a note about the picture, behind the troll lovers is the world. It seemed appropriate to have that in the picture as they came across the world to stay with me. And on one side is a small chest that my mother painted with stars and moons that adds to the fantasy feel. And to the right is an ancient chest that came from Scotland--down through my grandfather's side of the family--although many of them were from Ireland and probably from Wales before that.

So what do you think? Would the troll lovers open your heart to the possibility that everyone needs love?

I'll have to remember that the next time I face a troll in a game who is intent on obliterating me! Or one at work who woke up on the wrong side of the bed! Never me, of course!

Love the blog, you are right, everybody need love. I remember a short erotic story about a troll and the cop who loved her. Tusks and all. Of course the whole story took place under a bridge. Then there is the troll under the bridge with a VW Bug in his hand, I want to say that troll is outside Seattle, or maybe someplace in Oregon. I don't really remember, sorry.

From the stories I've read, the movies I've seen that have trolls in them, the trolls are not as cute as yours.

LOL about the troll under the bridge, Jessica! But I so agree--trolls are usually described as pretty hideous. But to their other half, they're lovable and seductive and beautiful. :)

Trolls are awesome.

They are right up there at the top of my favourite races, and that is mostly due to 2 rather different trolls.

Firstly are the trolls of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Especially Sgt Detritus of the Watch.

The other are the awesome voodoo using Jamacian accented trolls of Warcraft.

Thanks, Braeden, for commenting! I'll have to check them out. I love RPGs but haven't played WOW, though I know it's addictive. I haven't read Pratchett's Disworld series. I'll definitely check it out.

WOW is very addictive :)

Pratchett writes comedic fantasy - and the trolls get their best run in what is know as the Watch series. Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo, The Fifth Elephant and Thud are the best ones for the trolls.

I would have to agree with the thought that everyone needs to be loved and give love in return. There's a werewolf series by Patricia Briggs that has a few trolls in them. They're not all nasty. The series is call Mercy Thompson series, and she has a spin off from that one call the Alpha & Omega series. They are great books. I think I could love a troll. It's not all based on outward appearances. You can't help who (or what) you fall in love with. Shrek is a very lovable ogre, which I believe is similar to a troll.
*On a side note, WoW is a great game, but it can be addicting! I love that game, but I had to give it up because it took too much of my free time.

Thanks, Braeden! I'll check out the books you mentioned. I had been playing Dragon Age, until I had too many deadlines and my computer crashed. I haven't even started on Mass Effect, but look forward to seeing what it's all about. But it's like reading a book--I have to solve one more mystery, free one more victim, get rid of a lot more bad guys--once is not enough!

Thanks, Stephanie, I'll have to check them out. I never really thought of trolls as being something other than nasty, until I found the ones from Norway. But truly, just like in any species--there are good and evil! :) But yeah, RPGs can be addictive. I haven't played mine in a long time because I've had so many deadlines, but I've been itching to get back to Dragon Age. I had gotten stuck, killed off several times and need help with a very bad character. *sigh*

I think Trolls bring Good Luck. I have this Troll with Purple Hair. And he's wearing my Vikings Jersey. When I rub his Hair. My team seem to get better.
Your Trolls are so cute. I love them. And they need love. I love walking through the Hobbits house at the Ren Fest amongst the Trolls. They haven't hurt me yet.
