This was the first castle we visited and it was very cold here! I loved this castle--only one room that was finished off and decorated, otherwise it was in ruins and trying to envision what it looked like when people lived here was more fun.
It was high above cliffs, surrounded by water on 3 sides and had a long way down stairs, then a long path up again until you came to the one entrance, easy to see anyone approaching by land or by sea.
Here was one of the rooms that would have been occupied by someone of status.
This shows some of the walls and one of the more finished buildings.
I love the water, and loved seeing the waves crashing on the rocks below the castle's cliffs. It's a long way down!
Here is one of the storage rooms. Note all the rocks were covered in green moss. It was cold and misty, cloud-covered, a cold breeze while we were here.

Note the thickness of the walls. Long drop off here to the rocks below!

This was the well where they would get their water. I was having fun getting a reflection of the castle in the water. I imagined a medieval people gathering to get water at the well for meals.

In the earlier days, arrow slits were part of the defense system. Later, they created round holes for guns.
Again, rocky, watery grave if prisoners tried to escape, and very difficult to access from down below. The castles were built with primarily defense in mind.

This was the chapel.

We were very fortunate that the place was virtually empty and so were able to get a lot of pictures without having a ton of people in them. :)
After we saw this castle, I felt the trip was worth all the while.
Every vacation should have a disaster or two to make them really memorable, right? Of course! So I made my flight just fine to Houston, to Newark, was getting ready to board for Edinbourgh, and my passport had expired the month before.
I have to say that the folks at Continental Airlines were wonderful. They helped me to get to Philadelphia on Amtrak the next morning and the security at the Customs House were wonderful, and the clerks there too, to ensure that I could get on my way. It was a sweat job getting a train, a taxi, a photo from Kinkos over half a mile from the Custom House, and all the while I'm lugging a bag (the other went to Edinburgh and was happily waiting for me there), very briefly noting historical monuments and buildings along the way in my frantic rush, a very thorough screening, and then hours later with new passport in hand, a rushed taxi ride back, which was the scariest part as the meter went out on the driver's taxi and he kept trying to get his phone that had fallen on the floor while slamming on his brakes when someone stopped in front of him in the traffic filled streets. Then the train ride back to Newark, back through security and on the plane that I should have taken the night before.
Which meant that I didn't have a night to sleep. As soon as I arrived in Edinburgh, I met my friends and we were on our way across Scotland!
The way I look at it was that I had never been on a train, never to Philadelphia, and so it was a unique experience. And it showed that an impossible situation was made possible. I will also say that I'm not the only one who has faced this crisis!!!Although I wished I had seen that my passport was nearly expired. But I've only used it once in 10 years, so I never even thought about that aspect!!!
Maybe it'll go in a book someday!!!

Have any wild adventures in traveling?

I would have died! It always amazes me how people can just go with the flow - I would have been a disaster!
Oh horror of horrors! My worst traveling nightmare.I never imagined an airline would be so kind as to help you get a new one then reschedule your flight. That was a miracle! Glad it worked out for you and you didn't miss that wonderful castle!
B Fox, believe me I was in shock. I was afraid I'd left my cell phone at home by accident, finally found it in my purse, called my son to see if I could visit him in Pensacola early if things didn't work out and was totally crushed. I was up most of the night worrying whether I'd make the trip to Philadelphia and get the passport in time and make it back to the airport in time. I truly don't know how I stayed awake that first day in Scotland!!!
April, it was!!! And everyone at Continental in Newark were super. They helped me get a hotel in Newark for the night even and were truly wonderful. I would never have made it if it wasn't for them. When I arrived in Scotland, a lady met me and said she had my bag. She was so sweet. Everyone was. And believe me I was close to tears several times, but fought them back, vowing to do what I could to get through the ordeal and still make it!!!
Terry!!!!!How do you do it?Why did I even think your trip would go smoothly. Every event in your life has to test your fortitude. I'm so relieved it worked out. I know how awful you must have felt and how scared. It reminds me of my first trip to Europe. I was stuck in Amsterdam where I was to meet my daughter and granddaughter and her new husband. I couldn't locate my bags. And I was stuck on oneside of the secured area. They were waiting on the other. It worked out. My bags showed up the next day, they were delivered to there apt. But I was in a panic. I went through Newark too. They're great.
And great Castle Pictures. It brings back great memories of my Trip there. I can smell it and feel the wind and still hear it off those Castle Walls. Awesome. I hope your trip home and the rest of your stay is uneventful. Have a Great weekend. My son's coming home from Truck training. He's been on the road for 10 wks. He passed and has received his own truck. Funny, In truck training. They don't just get wheels. They get a whole truck. So I'm excited to see him again.
My passport expired last month. I used it once...10 years ago when I got it for a trip to Brussels.
Haven't used it since. :)
Good luck with the rest of your trip.
I'm so glad you made it to Scotland. Just think, you'll have an adventure story to share for years. :) I traveled for a living for many years. I was mostly lucky. The worst thing was my schedule. On one trip, I had to work in Australia on a Friday, and be in the office in Paris first thing Monday morning. Since I can't sleep inflight, let it be said, I was exhausted. Thanks for sharing your wonderful PICs, Terry.
Thank goodness you were able to get your passport and make your trip! I just returned from a tour of Scotland and Ireland too. The very first day, I fell down a flight of steps and broke my foot. I wasn't about to let a little thing like a few broken bones ruin MY trip. So, I gimped my way through the sites and got my walking cast when I got home. Who says we women are the weaker sex! Bah! I'm glad we BOTH made our trip great. :-)
Terry, thanks for adding the amazing pictures. I have too many disaster stories to tell, but I'm still searching for that one vacation that turns out just perfect. It's out there, I know it. But, that's probably not going to be the one that sticks with me, ya know. It's all about overcoming the adversity and still enjoying the trip. Beautiful country!!!

Great pictures! Made it all worthwhile after the horrendous start! The art department could probably use some of those pictures for cover work for historicals!
Hubby and I hiked in the Highlands and Islands for two weeks 18 months ago - I love Scotland, adore it, would live in the Highlands if I could. We had plenty of adventures, including train-related incidents - took Continental straight to Edinburgh also - The people are amazing, the history is incredible, the sites, the views, the rugged landscape...
I'm so jealous that you were just there!
Oh my gosh, Terry! I'm cringing just thinking of what you went through. Nightmare. But the pictures...oh so nice. I'm so glad you got the chance to go, and that you actually got there :)
LOL, Donna!!! When I go back to work next week, I'm sure my coworkers will shake their heads. :) Because of missing the flight the day before, I was so worried I wouldn't find my bag the next morning since we were driving that morning all over Scotland. :) Glad that your son is coming home and that he's got a truck!! Wishing him well!!! Enjoy your visit!!
Hey, Beth, you sound just like me!! If you get any sudden urges to fly to another country, just remember to update your passport!
Hey, Dawn, that is too neat. You must have been exhausted! It was bad enough to just be on vacation but to have to work and make any business-like decisions would be awful!
Ohmigosh, Maeve, how awful, but you're truly a heroine at heart who wouldn't let a "little" thing like that set you back. Wow, truly remarkable and glad you had such a wonderful time!
Rachel, I so agree! It's like Christmases and Thanksgivings or other holidays. The disastrous ones are the ones that stay in our memories forever!!! They're special in their own ways!
I so agree, Donna B! They would be beautiful for covers!!! They really inspire me to write some more historical and Scottish wolf stories. :)
Julia, that's so neat that you got to be there for so long. I wish I could have been there for longer. But I was just so happy I made it at all!!!
Thanks, Anita!!! Me too! The pictures turned out beautifully, although I took some from the car window as we were driving along and kept trying to avoid picturing the bird poop on the window. LOL :)
Yow! I'm glad they helped you with the passport issue so you could enjoy your trip!!!
Thanks for sharing the gorgeous pictures!!!
Lisa :)
Thanks, Lisa, me too!!! I would have been so upset if I hadn't made it!!!
